I am inspired by the energy in the sea and sky, and the relentless wind, waves and weather around the coastline of Orkney and the North West of Scotland.

I aim to capture the atmosphere, sensations and emotions a place has inspired with expressive, gestural marks and through a process of both building up and removing layers of paint.

Outdoors I use sketchbooks to gather marks, colours, and shapes, often creating tools for mark making and mixtures for painting using materials I gather on my journeys.

Once back in my Orkney studio, I work mostly from memory, compressing aspects of a place at different times of day, tide and seasons.

I work on paper, canvas and wood panel using acrylic paint, oil

and chalk pastel, ink, and graphite.
